The story is in various purans, most detailed ones are in Bramhavaivarta a vaishnav puran and Shiva Puran obviously shaiawa p[uran, and here is the summary story of all Purans put together there is little difference in this story as per Kalpa Bheda in different Purans.Here goes the story as depicted in Purans.
Vrinda was dweller of GolOKA The cowshed of Kailasa where Krishna rules, it is his Loka which also belongs to Ganpati.

Krishna being ruler there Once thought he is supreme hence can do anything, who is there to stop him or ask for explanation, So he out of his great views about himself indulged in dalliance with both Prithwi and Vrinda, and suddenly came Radhika and caught Krishna red handed, seeing furious Radha, Vrinda melted and prithwi went home,

Radha scolded Krishna severely how dare he indulges in dalliances like a normalian MAN overpowered by Kam, So she cursed Krishna that as you did so utterly lowly human thing, go and become human behave like One.
Krishna as he was culprit stayed mum looking downwards waiting for Radhika to calm down, but his sycophant Gana shreedama, started accusing Radhika falsely siding with Krishna justifying his disloyalty, To which Radhika didnt took kindly and cursed him that, as you are taking side for an Asuri Karm an act of disloyalty and justifying it, go and became Rakshas yourself, and than justify act of adultery when it will happen to your harm. Krishna now spake and said, Oh Radhika it was not his fault he was just trying to defend me, Radhika also after some times regretted why she cursed them both, But her curses can be thwarted or taken back.
Krishna and whole Go Lok dwellers were sad, Krishna went to Kailasa, and worshiped Shiva,. Shiva said, Oh Krishna i know what all has happened there, Adi Shiva has made Me Mahavishnu and Bramha, You are complete incarnation of Vishnu and I have given you greatest abode to enjoy, But you disrespected Our high lord Avyakta Parmatman Sadashiva and became haughty indulged in wrong acts, and that is why Shambhavi maya has taken your senses and made you and Radha do all which has happened. So know now truth, no body exceeds the Great Lord, all are subservient to law of Mahashakti and Sadashiva.
From now on remember no body or even you is completely free swatanatra all who have name and form are limited, you forget that it is because of your hard penances for me and Mahashakti that you have been blessed to become a God, still you are not above law of ritam and Karma, So from now on, always remember and worship our great Lord Sadashiva. Now go and worship him only his worship will bring your happiness and dont worry, you or shree dama Vrinda etc will go to earth but that whole time would be like a second of Go Loka, so go worship Lord.
(See a point here, The first Krishna ever was not Born on earth, it was way later after Curse of Radha that Krishna descended on earth, this is the incident which made krishna come to earth.)
Now this Shree dama became Shankhachood in one kalpa and Jalandhar in another, Vrinda became his wife, krishna incarnated as Vasudev Krishna did mahabharat. Now some thing about Vrinda too. She was a pious lady wanted to have Vishnu as her husband did penenances for many celestial years for that, Than she came to knew that Ganesh is also an incarnation of Vishnu, Shree Ganesh was a child, she was young woman, She asked Ganpati to become her husband, but he refused poiltely citing such great age difference, But she was obstinate and forced him, ganpati cursed him, that she shall neveer ever be even near him, She fled awaya nd worshiped Bramha who gave her boon that surely you will get Vishnu as Husband but not in this life, IN next life she was born as Vrinda and accepted Shankha chood as her husband, as she was a pious lady she remained staunch pativrata.
Now here Shankhachood being instiagted by Narad won all gods, defeated Vishnu and made him his guest, as he was related with him too being brother of Shree Lakshmi , as Vishnu and laksmi left there abode and start living with him his place became much greater than other lokas and devas were jealous and narad again instigated him to conquer kailasa and Shiva. He out his ego send messeneger to shiva to give up his loka, Shiva didnt took it kindly and his messenger was severely punsihed, it is comical and horrible incident what happened with him.
Than Shiva came to attack him, to which he first requested shiva that, he is no match for Shiva, it is like fight between, rat and a Lion, he said by defeating him shiva wont get any praises as it his nails job to destroy even whole universe, but if Jalandhgar wins it will be a great insult, Shiva smiled and said, why he is so concerned about my reputation, i give him last warning, send Vishnu Lakshmi to there home, enough of guesting business now and give all to Devas which he has snatched from them or come and face me.
War started and third day, when Jalandhar and Rudra were face to face, aftre some time, Shiva summoned his pralayankar Trishul and was about to hurl at him and an Akashwani requested him, it said, Oh lord of Universe, why to use a cannon to kill a mosquito, you can annihillate world just by glance of your third eye, what value has this puny asura, but lord kindly do not break law of ritam and reputation of Trinity, This asura has Narayan Kavach and his wife is also pativrata, Hence to honor these both things kindly refrain from killing him today by your invincible weapon or if you hurl it, maryada of Lords will be broken. hence let power of narayan astra be the way it is. Than Vishnu took form of a bramhin and asked for Narayan kavach, Shankhachood being Vaishnava gave that easily to him. But still Vrindas pativratya was intact.
And also Vrinda was basically belonged to Krishna, she always wanted Vishnu to be her husband, now Vishnu took form of Shankhachood and mated with Vrinda, she was cheated and when she can fathom it she roared, who are you, tell me or i will decimate you here and now, Vishnu got afraid, he turned himself in to his chaturbhuj roop, and Vrinda cursed him, You heartless Lord, we both worshiped you and you conspired to kill your own, youb have heart of stone, hence be ur heart become stone and been eaten by insects, and she out of her pativratya tejas engulfed herself in fire and turned in to ashes. Vishnu was overpowered by immense Guilt, He prayed to Vrinda asked for forgiveness and leapt her ashes around his body and cried for her.
Devas went haywire what happened to Shree Hari, They went to shiva, he said, worship three goddesses Parvati lakshmi and Saraswati they can do something, They prayed to them and they made three flowers plants from there ansah, malti, dhatri and Tusli, Vrinda became Tulsi, actaully her hair part became Tulsi plant.
than shiva told Vishnu and other gods, as per Vrindas curse, Hari, yout heart will appear at Gandaki river and will be known as Shaligram shila, And as per Vrinda curse, insects would eat it and make certain designs , on it worshiping such Sahligram will be from now on will be highly auspicious,
the one who Joins, Shankha, Shaligram and Tulsi together will be highly blessed by Shree Hari. And since than started worship of Shaligram shila.
Then there at go Loka, Shree Dama came back, Vrinda came back with much greater status command and respect and along with Radha Krishna they are dwelling there happily.
